In celebrating the diversity of our cultures across the continent, we celebrate that which unites our humanity - food.
The title of this blog is borrowed from the popular expression deeply rooted in the Nyanja | Chewa heritage of a family we spoke to.
When translated the expression means “hunger is in the teeth.” How peculiar isn’t it? One would easily think that it’s more of a stomach issue but not the way we came to understand it.
To us, it means no matter how small the food portions are, everyone must be able to have a share of the food. After all, food is more enjoyable when you’re sharing. That said, we think this is what makes a house a home and supports the essence of what a family should be.
Like this family, at African Basket, Njala ili mmano conveys essential human virtues of compassion, similar to Ubuntu - which is sometimes translated as “I am because we are” by affirming the humanity of others through sharing which is why we are the home for ALL Africans.
The Taste of Home at African Basket is knowing that Njala ili mmano from the Lobels Biscuits and Kariba Bream to the fibre-rich Umgaiwa. Call that friend or family member you haven’t seen in a while and give them the ultimate gift of time - share a meal with them. If they are too far, we got you! The Taste of Home can be delivered to your doorstep across South Africa – no one is being left out of this new development.
We love food and so do you! We hope as you share your time and hearty meals with loved ones you’ll share the wisdom of Njala ili mmano.
